First woman to top NDA exam commissioned as Army officer
The Supreme Court's landmark judgment in October 2021 allowed women to enter the National Defence Academy (NDA), paving the way for a historic achievement. Lieutenant Shanan Dhaka, a 23-year-old from Panchkula, has become the first woman to top the NDA entrance examination and was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army on June 13, 2026.
Lt. Dhaka initially aimed for the civil services examination while studying at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi. However, after the Supreme Court's decision opened the NDA to women, she decided to attempt the entrance exam. 'I appeared for the examination just to test myself—and I became the first woman topper,' she told The Indian Express.
She joined the NDA in August 2022 as part of one of the academy's early batches of women cadets. Her training required hard work and resilience as the academy adapted to the historic change. Lt. Dhaka said that serving in the Army offers a unique privilege: 'You don't just see India—you live it. As an Army officer, you become a part of a place, its people and its culture.'
Her family has a strong tradition of service. Her father served in the Army before joining the Panchkula Police, her elder sister serves in the Military Nursing Service, and her younger sister is in school. She credits her family for supporting her dreams without imposing any career choices.
Lt. Dhaka hopes her journey inspires other young women. 'My message to every girl is simple—dream big and never let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. Don't think any profession is beyond your reach. Believe in yourself, work hard and opportunities will follow,' she said.
Her father, Vijay Dhaka, expressed pride in his daughter's achievement, noting that his three daughters have demonstrated that daughters are no less than sons. Lt. Dhaka's accomplishment marks a significant milestone for gender equality in the Indian armed forces.
