FAA Probes Close Call Between Marine One and Passenger Jet at Reagan Airport

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said that a military helicopter carrying President Donald Trump came briefly too close to a passenger jet departing from Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The agency stressed that the President was not in danger.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FAA said, “Based on our preliminary safety review, there was momentary loss of separation after which the aircraft continued to move away from one another.” The agency confirmed that the air traffic controller was in contact with both the commercial pilot and the Marine One pilot during the incident.

The incident has raised questions about why commercial flights were permitted to depart while Marine One was in the vicinity, a time when such traffic is typically halted. Two sources told Reuters that air-traffic controllers had not halted commercial flights at Reagan National as required under a policy set last year following a fatal mid-air collision.

According to a pool report, Marine One lifted off from the Ellipse near the White House at approximately 2:33 p.m. EDT, en route to Joint Base Andrews for a trip to Los Angeles. A source said that Envoy Air 3742, a regional E170 jet bound for Pensacola, Florida, departed at 2:34 p.m. and was involved in the incident with Marine One. Envoy Air is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines, which did not immediately comment. Both aircraft landed without incident.

The FAA requires aircraft to remain separated by at least 1.5 miles horizontally and 500 feet vertically around airports. In this instance, the separation was momentarily lost, but the aircraft quickly moved apart.

The incident comes in the aftermath of a January 2025 collision between a military helicopter and a commercial jet that killed 67 people. Following that tragedy, the FAA barred mixed helicopter and jet traffic around Reagan Washington National Airport and imposed permanent restrictions on helicopter operations in the area. In March, the agency also prohibited the use of visual separation for handling helicopter traffic near major airports.

Two sources told Reuters that the FAA is planning to convene a safety review team to examine the incident. Another regional flight, Republic 4700, which was operating on behalf of American Airlines and had departed from Raleigh-Durham, was about 3 miles from Reagan at the time and was rerouted out of caution. FlightAware data shows the aircraft looped around the airport before landing at 2:52 p.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also considering whether to open an investigation. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy told Reuters on Wednesday, “We’re in the process of collecting additional information. Our air traffic control specialists are reviewing the information they already have and information they’re going to collect to determine whether we investigate.”

Under standard procedures, FAA air traffic control is usually given at least three minutes’ notice before Marine One departs to halt traffic from Reagan. The fact that this did not occur in this instance has prompted scrutiny from safety experts and lawmakers alike.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about airspace safety around the nation’s capital. While no injuries or damage were reported, the close call serves as a reminder of the need for strict adherence to separation protocols, especially in the wake of the 2025 tragedy.
