Estranged Husband Stabs Wife at Kilpauk Bank, Arrested
A 37-year-old man was arrested on Saturday evening after he allegedly attacked his estranged wife with a knife inside an HDFC Bank branch in Kilpauk, Chennai. The victim, Rebecca, 28, of Perambur, has been working as a cashier at the bank for the past six months, police said. She sustained injuries to her head and left hand and is reported to be in critical condition at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
According to police, Rebecca married Satheesh in 2017, and the couple has a daughter. They separated around two years ago due to marital disputes, and Satheesh lived with their daughter after the separation.
The attack on Saturday follows a tragic incident in July 2025, when Satheesh allegedly killed their daughter by slitting her throat and attempted to take his own life within the limits of the St. Thomas Mount police station. He was rescued by police, who registered a murder case and arrested him. He had been lodged in prison in connection with the case and was released last week. The murder case is pending trial.
On Saturday, at around 6.25 p.m., while Rebecca was working at the bank, Satheesh allegedly entered the premises carrying a knife and a can of petrol. He attacked her with the knife, causing injuries to her head and left hand. People present at the bank hit him with an iron chair and restrained him. They alerted the police, who arrived and took him to the police station. The petrol can was reportedly seized by the police.
Police said they have initiated an investigation and are recording statements from those present at the scene. It is not yet clear whether the victim's statement has been recorded, as she is undergoing treatment. Satheesh is expected to be produced before a court on charges related to attempted murder and other relevant sections. The exact sections under which he has been booked are yet to be formally announced.
Rebecca is undergoing treatment at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical. Medical staff said she is being closely monitored. The incident has raised concerns among bank employees about security, though police have not confirmed any security lapse.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the accused is in custody and will face legal proceedings. The officer also said police are examining whether any prior complaints were filed by the victim regarding the earlier incident. The officer added that the police are in touch with the victim’s family to ensure necessary support. Further details are awaited.
