Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat to Double Coaches to 16
The Union Railway Minister, Aswini Vaishnaw, has announced that the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express will have its coach count increased from eight to 16. The announcement came in response to a demand raised by Hibi Eden, Member of Parliament, in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Eden had sought an increase in the number of coaches to 20, along with the introduction of a night service on the same route.
According to an official release from the Ministry of Railways, the minister's reply confirmed the augmentation of coaches from the current eight to 16. However, no specific timeline for the change was mentioned. The minister's response also did not address the request for an additional Vande Bharat rake during night hours, leaving that demand pending.
The Vande Bharat Express, an indigenously built semi-high-speed train, has been operating on the Ernakulam-Bengaluru corridor since January 2025, after the service was extended from its original Kasaragod-Bengaluru run. The train connects the commercial capital of Kerala with Karnataka's capital, catering to a high volume of daily commuters, business travellers, and tourists. Its introduction was widely seen as a significant boost to regional connectivity.
Doubling the number of coaches from eight to 16 is expected to nearly double the carrying capacity of the train. A standard eight-coach Vande Bharat rake typically accommodates around 528 passengers, while a 16-coach version can seat over 1,100. The expansion is likely to ease the heavy demand on this route, which has been a persistent issue since the train's launch. Passengers frequently report difficulty in booking tickets, especially during weekends and festival seasons.
Mr. Eden, who represents the Ernakulam constituency, had argued in Parliament that the current capacity was inadequate to meet the growing travel needs. He also stressed the need for a night service, pointing out that many working professionals and traders prefer overnight travel options. The railway minister's reply, while confirming the coach increase, was silent on the night service proposal, which continues to be a topic of demand from various quarters.
The decision to augment the coaches aligns with the broader push by Indian Railways to expand the Vande Bharat fleet and improve passenger amenities on high-demand routes. Since the first Vande Bharat train was introduced in 2019, the service has expanded to multiple corridors across the country, with newer versions featuring advanced safety systems and improved comfort.
The Ernakulam-Bengaluru route is one of the busiest inter-state routes in southern India, handling significant passenger traffic between Kerala and Karnataka. The increase in coaches is expected to offer some relief to travellers, though the exact date of implementation remains unclear. Railway officials are likely to provide further details in the coming weeks, including any changes to the train's schedule or fare structure.
For now, passengers and elected representatives alike have welcomed the announcement as a positive step. The MP's office conveyed that Mr. Eden will continue to pursue the night service demand in the upcoming sessions of Parliament. The minister's response, as recorded in the Lok Sabha, reflects a responsive approach to regional needs, even if not all demands have been fully met at this stage.
