Emergency-Era Play on Snehalatha Reddy's Ordeal Sparks Morality vs Artistic Freedom Debate in Kerala

The recent staging of MISA, a play recounting the custodial torture and persecution suffered by activist and artist Snehalatha Reddy during the Emergency, has triggered a major controversy in Kerala. The production, performed at the DYFI State Conference in Thrissur, has drawn accusations of obscenity from critics, while the cast and organisers defend it as a powerful portrayal of political repression.

MISA — named after the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, which allowed detention without trial during the Emergency imposed in 1975 — was staged by Chilanka Floating Theatre, Kozhikode. The play focuses on Snehalatha Reddy, an actor, producer, writer and activist who was arrested on May 2, 1976, and held for eight months in Bangalore Central Jail under MISA. She endured harsh prison conditions and torture, and her health deteriorated due to chronic asthma and a lung infection, compounded by inadequate medical care. Released on parole on January 15, 1977, she died five days later.

Critics have objected to certain intense and realistic scenes and costume choices, calling the performance obscene. However, supporters argue that short clips and isolated visuals from the play were selectively circulated online, stripped of their historical and artistic context, fueling moral outrage.

DYFI State secretary V.K. Sanoj defended the production, saying, "Those who look at only some scenes from the play through the lens of morality are trying to forget the severe persecution suffered by people during the Emergency." He said the play was not merely entertainment but sought to make the audience witnesses to the violence and repression of that era. He alleged that isolated scenes were shared to deliberately portray the play as an indecent performance staged to draw crowds.

Chinnoos Chilanka, who plays the central character, said portions of the play had been edited and circulated with an obscene slant. "The purpose of the play has been achieved. It has reached where it needed to go," she said, responding to the controversy. She described MISA as "fundamentally about state terror and the silencing of those who question power."

Writer and activist Saradakutty also defended the play, calling the controversy "the tragedy of looking at an art form narrowly, forgetting its political responsibility and historical consciousness." In a Facebook post, she argued that trying to reduce the production to a few provocative moments ignored its larger artistic and political narrative.

Snehalatha Reddy gained national attention through the landmark Kannada film Samskara, based on a story by U.R. Ananthamurthy and directed by her husband Pattabhi Rama Reddy. Her political activism brought her into direct confrontation with the Emergency regime, and her death after release has come to symbolise the human cost of that period.

The play will be staged again at the public meeting venue of the DYFI State Conference on August 22, according to Mr. Sanoj. The controversy has opened a wider debate on the boundaries of artistic freedom, the historical memory of the Emergency, and the moral standards applied to political theatre.

Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order Striking Down Tamil Nadu Reservation Notification for Converts

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Tamil Nadu government's appeal and upheld a Madras High Court order quashing a State notification that extended reservation benefits to converts to Islam from communities already listed as backward. A Bench headed by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra held that conversion alone does not make a person a member of a notified backward Muslim community, and that the notification created an 'artificial group' without the statutory social checks the law requires.
