ED launches money laundering probe into Jharkhand recruitment exam irregularities

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a probe into alleged irregularities in several recruitment examinations in Jharkhand, including the Jharkhand General Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination (JSSC-CGL), according to officials familiar with the matter. The probe has been registered under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The agency has taken cognisance of a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the state police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and other complaints regarding the alleged irregularities. The move comes amid sustained protests by students who have been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter.

Student demonstrations in the state have entered their 17th day, with protesters refusing to end their agitation. On Monday, students began a march to 'gherao' (surround) the state assembly, even as the government claimed to have accepted “98 per cent” of their demands. However, protesters have rejected this assertion, stating that only three of the 13 examinations in question were cancelled.

In a related development, the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) saw all three of its members resign on Sunday. The members—Ajeeta Bhattacharya, wife of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Supriyo Bhattacharyya, Anima Hansda, and Jamal Ahmad—stepped down after being summoned by the Jharkhand CID for questioning over alleged irregularities, including paper leaks.

The ED's intervention marks a significant escalation in the investigation, as the agency will now examine whether funds generated through alleged malpractices were laundered. Officials said the probe will look into the financial trail associated with the examination irregularities, including any proceeds of crime.

The protests, which began in early January, have drawn attention to the recruitment process for thousands of government jobs in Jharkhand. Students have alleged that question papers were leaked and that the selection process was manipulated, affecting the chances of genuine candidates. They have demanded a CBI probe, arguing that a state-level investigation would not be impartial given the political connections of some individuals involved.

The Hemant Soren-led government has denied allegations of a cover-up, maintaining that it has taken appropriate action. Officials have pointed to the cancellation of three examinations and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter. However, the students remain unconvinced, insisting on a CBI inquiry as the only way to ensure justice.

The resignations of the JPSC members have further fuelled the controversy, with opposition parties calling for a thorough investigation into the commission's functioning. The state government has yet to announce new appointments to the commission.

Observers note that the ED probe could have broader implications, as it brings the case under the ambit of financial scrutiny. If evidence of money laundering is found, the matter could see additional legal proceedings, potentially including attachment of assets.

Set against this backdrop, the next course of action will depend on the ED's findings and the continued pressure from student groups. The protest movement has seen participation from various student organisations, and the gherao of the assembly is expected to test the government's response.

As the situation unfolds, both the central and state agencies are likely to face questions about transparency and the pace of investigation. The ED's involvement adds a new dimension to a case that has already shaken the state's administrative machinery.
