Doctors Report Surge in Influenza A Cases in Mumbai; Urge Precautions Amid Covid-19

Doctors in Mumbai have reported a noticeable increase in Influenza A cases over the past few weeks, describing the scale as unprecedented. Dr Amit Thadani, a Mumbai-based surgeon, posted on social media that the current wave is 'almost epidemic-like' and urged people to wear masks outdoors. This comes as Covid-19 cases are also being reported in Andhra Pradesh, where two deaths and eight active cases have been recorded.

Dr Manas Mengar, senior consultant in pulmonology at KIMS Hospitals Thane, confirmed the rise but clarified that it does not necessarily indicate an epidemic. 'While influenza typically peaks during monsoon and winter, the current rise has spread more widely than most people expect. This shows the virus is actively circulating in the community,' he said.

Dr Samir Garde, director of Pulmonology and Lung Transplant at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, noted that such increases are common when weather conditions change. 'Influenza A is a viral infection spread through droplets from coughs, sneezes, or talks. Symptoms include sudden high fever, body ache, sore throat, headache, dry cough, and extreme tiredness. Unlike a common cold, influenza can make people feel severely unwell within hours,' he explained.

Experts attribute the surge to frequent travel, crowded indoor spaces, changing weather, and lower immunity in some individuals. Most healthy people recover within 5–7 days with rest and hydration, but vulnerable groups—such as senior citizens, pregnant women, young children, and those with chronic conditions—face higher risk of complications like pneumonia. They are advised to seek early medical attention.

Since Influenza A and Covid-19 share similar symptoms, distinguishing them without testing is difficult. Doctors recommend preventive measures: frequent hand washing, covering mouth while coughing or sneezing, wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces, ensuring good ventilation, and avoiding close contact if symptomatic. Vaccination against seasonal influenza is also strongly advised for vulnerable groups.

Dr Mengar emphasised that the situation calls for awareness rather than panic. 'Respiratory viruses often circulate together. Simple habits like wearing masks during outbreaks, maintaining hand hygiene, and staying updated on vaccinations can reduce infection risk and prevent severe illness,' he said.
