DMK Demands Retired Judge-Led Probe Into Puducherry Fake Drug Cases
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has called for a special investigation team, supervised by a retired judge, to probe the manufacturing of spurious drugs in Puducherry.
In a statement, party convenor R. Siva highlighted that several cases of counterfeit medicine production have emerged in the union territory recently. Last year, police uncovered a major racket involved in the manufacture and sale of fake drugs, which was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“Very recently, another case has surfaced involving manufacture of counterfeit drugs. Reports suggest that around 625 varieties of medicines were smuggled to neighbouring countries. There are also reports of connivance between the accused and the ruling party members in the cases. The government should constitute a special team for the investigation under the direct supervision of a retired judge,” Mr. Siva said.
The DMK also demanded an overhaul of the Drugs Department, accusing it of failing to curb illegal drug manufacturing. If their demands are not met, the party has threatened to organise major agitations against the AINRC-BJP government in Puducherry.
