Djokovic Outlasts Auger-Aliassime in Longest Wimbledon Quarterfinal: 5 Hours 15 Minutes
Novak Djokovic defeated third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in a marathon quarterfinal at Wimbledon on Tuesday, winning 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4) after five hours and 15 minutes. The match set a record as the longest men's singles quarterfinal in Wimbledon history.
The 37-year-old Djokovic, seeking a 25th Grand Slam title, reached his eighth consecutive Wimbledon semifinal, breaking Roger Federer's record for most consecutive men's singles semifinal appearances at the tournament. The previous mark was seven.
Djokovic saved a set point in the opening set tie-break before taking it 10-8. Auger-Aliassime responded by winning the second set 6-3, capitalising on a double fault from Djokovic to break and level the match. With the Centre Court roof closed at around 7:40 p.m. local time due to fading light, Djokovic initially complained but regained composure in the third set, breaking Auger-Aliassime in the sixth game and holding serve to take a two sets to one lead.
The Canadian fought back in the fourth set, forcing another tie-break which he won 7-4. The deciding set also went to a tie-break, where Djokovic prevailed 7-4 to seal the victory. The match lasted five hours and 15 minutes, just two minutes short of Djokovic's longest match at Wimbledon, a 2018 semifinal win over Rafael Nadal that lasted five hours and 17 minutes.
Djokovic will face either Jannik Sinner or Roman Safiullin in the semifinals as he continues his pursuit of a record eighth Wimbledon title.
