Dindigul protest: Differently abled persons urge Tamil Nadu to hike monthly assistance

Hundreds of differently abled persons took to the streets across Dindigul district on Tuesday, demanding that the Tamil Nadu government increase the monthly financial assistance provided to them. The protest was organised by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC), a collective that has long advocated for better social security measures for persons with disabilities.

The demonstrators, who gathered at several locations in the district, held placards and raised slogans calling for a revision of the current allowance. According to the association, the existing monthly assistance is inadequate to meet even basic needs, forcing many families into severe hardship. The group pointed out that neighbouring states and union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry, provide significantly higher monthly allowances to differently abled persons.

“Our brothers and sisters in other states receive far better support. We are not asking for charity, but a dignified life that the Tamil Nadu government must ensure,” said a senior member of TARATDAC, who was part of the protest. The association has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the state's Department of Social Welfare to revise the allowance at the earliest.

This protest comes amid growing conversations about the financial challenges faced by persons with disabilities in India. While the central government runs several schemes, much of the monthly support for disabled persons falls within the purview of state governments. Tamil Nadu, which is often hailed as a pioneer in social welfare, currently provides a monthly assistance that activists argue has not kept pace with inflation and the rising cost of living.

The demands made by TARATDAC are not limited to financial aid. The protesters also called for better access to healthcare, inclusive education, and guaranteed employment opportunities. However, the immediate focus of Tuesday’s demonstration was the enhancement of the monthly allowance, which many described as a critical lifeline for thousands of families.

TARATDAC, which represents caregivers and differently abled individuals across Tamil Nadu, has previously submitted representations to the government on this issue. The association has expressed disappointment over the lack of a concrete response so far. The protest in Dindigul is part of a broader statewide campaign to bring attention to these concerns.

District administration officials were present at the protest sites to maintain order and note down the grievances of the demonstrators. The protesters made it clear that they would continue their agitation until the government took meaningful action. “We are ready to fight as long as it takes. The government cannot ignore us any longer,” said one protester who had travelled from a nearby village to join the demonstration.

Observers note that the issue of disability pensions has become a significant political and social subject in several Indian states, with comparable movements emerging in other regions. In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, for instance, the state government recently announced an increase in the monthly pension for differently abled persons, a move that has been welcomed by rights groups. This has put additional pressure on Tamil Nadu to match or exceed those standards.

As the day wore on, the protests remained peaceful, with participants following all COVID-19 protocols. Organisers said they would await the government's response and decide on further agitations accordingly. They also called upon the media and civil society to support their cause and amplify their demand for a more inclusive and supportive welfare framework.

Meanwhile, political parties in Tamil Nadu have taken note of the protest. Leaders from the opposition have backed the demand, asking the state government to act immediately. The ruling party has not yet issued an official statement on the issue, but sources within the social welfare department indicated that a review of the assistance amount may be underway.

For now, the differently abled community in Dindigul and beyond continues to wait for a response that could significantly alter their quality of life.
