Dharwad Court Sentences Man to 20 Years for Raping Minor Girl

The Second Additional District and Sessions Court and the POCSO Special Court in Dharwad has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 20 years of imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl, in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The convict, Praveen Savanur, a resident of Kalghatagi in Karnataka, was found guilty of luring the victim and taking her on his motorcycle to a field on April 4, 2023, where he committed the crime. The court, presided over by Judge Rajkumar C., pronounced the verdict after a thorough trial.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of ₹1.20 lakh on the convict. The fine amount will be paid as compensation to the victim, supplementing the ₹7 lakh compensation already provided by the state government under the victim compensation scheme.

The Kalaghatagi police conducted the investigation and filed the chargesheet, leading to the conviction. The judgment underscores the legal system's commitment to protecting children from sexual offences and ensuring justice for survivors.
