Derek O'Brien Urges PM Modi to Convene All-Party Meet on Delimitation Bill

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the proposed delimitation bill. In his letter, O'Brien expressed concerns over the government's approach, describing it as lacking transparency and inclusiveness.

O'Brien, who serves as the Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal, cautioned against what he termed 'cloak-and-dagger tactics' in handling the sensitive issue of delimitation. He emphasised that any redrawing of electoral boundaries should be done through a consultative process involving all political parties and stakeholders.

The delimitation bill, which aims to redraw the boundaries of parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on the latest census data, has sparked debate among political parties. Critics argue that without proper consultation, the exercise could be used to alter the political landscape in favour of the ruling party.

In his letter, O'Brien called for a transparent and democratic process, highlighting the need for a level playing field. He also requested the Prime Minister to initiate a dialogue to build consensus on the matter.

The government has yet to respond to O'Brien's request. This development comes amid growing calls for a more inclusive approach to electoral reforms.
