Delhi's Aruna Asaf Ali Marg to get elevated corridor; Rs 2-crore feasibility study approved
The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken the first step towards building an elevated corridor on Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, one of South Delhi's busiest stretches. On July 20, the department approved a budget of nearly Rs 2 crore for a detailed feasibility study of the proposed elevated road, according to officials.
Aruna Asaf Ali Marg is a key arterial route connecting Mahipalpur and Mehrauli with the Outer Ring Road. However, heavy traffic, multiple intersections, and local movement result in persistent congestion, especially during peak hours. The proposed elevated corridor is intended to segregate traffic and provide substantial relief to nearby road networks.
The decision follows a meeting chaired by the Secretary to the Chief Minister on March 10, during which the PWD was directed to engage a consultant for feasibility studies of elevated corridors to reduce traffic congestion in South Delhi. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the proposed project is expected to provide “a signal-free corridor along one of South Delhi’s busiest stretches, significantly reducing travel time for commuters”.
The feasibility study will examine the technical and financial viability of the elevated corridor, including design, cost estimates, and environmental impact. Officials said that if approved, the corridor could become a model for other congested areas in the city.
Commuters in the area have long demanded better infrastructure to tackle the daily traffic snarls. With the study underway, residents hope for a concrete solution in the near future.
