Delhi protests: Thousands regroup after police crackdown, Opposition leaders detained

Thousands of protesters regrouped at the Jantar Mantar protest site in Delhi on Tuesday, a day after security forces cleared the area, as the ongoing agitation over education reform and paper leaks continued. The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and supported by Opposition parties, saw heavy rain but did not deter demonstrators.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of exploiting students for political gain, stating that the Opposition was changing goalposts to prolong the agitation. The BJP termed the protest at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence a 'symbol of anarchy'. Rahul Gandhi, along with other Opposition leaders, was detained by Delhi Police after attempting to stage a sit-in outside the PM's residence.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike demanding education reform, was shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram following a Delhi High Court order. He remains under medical supervision.

Parliament remained paralysed for the second day of the Monsoon Session as Opposition members protested over the NEET paper leak, the police crackdown, and other issues. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned multiple times.

In international news, the death toll from the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 5,278, with 16,740 injured, according to official figures.
