Delhi Protest Crackdown: Mumbai on High Alert, Police Deploy Heavily

Following a police crackdown on the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest in Delhi on Monday, Mumbai has seen a significant increase in police presence, particularly in South Mumbai near Azad Maidan. Authorities have taken preventive measures to avoid any gatherings in support of the Delhi protesters, who faced lathi charge and tear gas during their 'Chalo Sansad' march.

On Tuesday, Mumbai Police summoned activists and students who were charged for protesting outside Shivaji Park ground 'without permission' on Sunday. Seven FIRs were filed against 900 individuals in connection with that protest, which was attended by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. Additionally, seven FIRs were registered against over 300 people for protest-related activities on Monday.

A police officer stated, 'We have denied permission for protests in south Mumbai. Our forces are deployed to prevent any unlawful assembly across the city.'

Reacting to the detentions, the CJP posted on X: 'Why is @MumbaiPolice detaining peaceful protesters in Mumbai? Peaceful protests are a part of our democracy. You will not be able to repress youth movements with police force. We will only come back stronger.'

The Delhi Police action on Monday against the CJP campaign, which began as a satirical protest on social media and later gained momentum with activist Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike, has become a significant moment in the movement. Videos showing police using batons, tear gas, and physically removing protesters have circulated widely, prompting reactions from various sections of society.

In response, Mumbai Police have increased their presence to anticipate any backlash. Meanwhile, CJP supporters continue their sit-in in Delhi under heavy police surveillance.
