Delhi Protest: Activists Reoccupy Jantar Mantar, Wangchuk Continues Fast
New Delhi, July 20, 2026 – In a significant development, protesters associated with a civil rights group reclaimed the Jantar Mantar protest site on Monday, hours after police dismantled their stage and blocked a march towards Parliament. The demonstration, which has been ongoing for days, saw thousands of participants demanding action on issues including unemployment and environmental protection.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda met with representatives of the group, including spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, and assured them that the government would hold internal discussions on their demands. However, the meeting did not lead to an immediate resolution.
Earlier in the day, police prevented protesters from marching to Parliament, citing security concerns. The police action, which occurred amid an internet shutdown in the New Delhi district, left several people injured. The group accused the Delhi Police of using excessive force, alleging that students were hurt and that the wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk was pushed during the scuffle.
In response, Sonam Wangchuk announced he would continue his indefinite hunger strike, stating that the police action had strengthened his resolve. The protest has drawn attention to the group's demands, which include better job opportunities and stricter environmental regulations.
The sit-in near Kerala House continues as activists await further government response.
