Delhi Police Asks X to Remove Posts Targeting Constitutional Heads: Routine Action

The Delhi Police on Wednesday wrote to the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, in connection with a complaint alleging that derogatory, malicious, and defamatory content targeting constitutional heads is being circulated on the platform.

The police have requested the platform to delete or remove the alleged post or video immediately and provide the complete registrant details, including full name, address, contact details, and email ID of the account holder.

Vinit Kumar, DCP of the IFSO (Special Cell) of Delhi Police, described this as routine communication to platforms for takedown of posts. He added that it was not related to the protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital. Kumar also said that no First Information Report (FIR) related to such posts has been registered in the last month.

This development comes as the Delhi Police is in the process of sending takedown notices to Instagram as well, in an attempt to remove several reels and posts that emerged during recent youth protests at Jantar Mantar and other locations, officials said.

Without specifying the time frame or the exact nature of the content, the officer admitted that a large number of such posts had recently been flagged and taken down. Law enforcement agencies typically send takedown notices under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, which notifies platforms of specified content that is illegal, although it does not impose a legally binding takedown requirement.
