Delhi High Court restrains Ilaiyaraaja from exploiting 134-film music catalogue

The Delhi High Court has issued an ad interim injunction against composer Ilaiyaraaja, barring him from exploiting, licensing, or claiming ownership over music from 134 films in a copyright dispute with Saregama India Limited. The order was passed by Justice Tushar Rao Gedela on Wednesday.

The injunction covers some of the most celebrated Tamil films, including Annakkili, 16 Vayathiniley, Kavikkuyil, Bharathi, Pallavi Anu Pallavi, Mullum Malarum, Raaja Paarvai, Netrikkann, and Kalyanaraman, along with 125 other titles from the same period. The order will remain in effect until the final disposal of the suit.

The court’s ruling comes in response to a suit filed by Saregama, which claims ownership of the copyright in the musical works composed by Ilaiyaraaja for these films. The composer has contested the claim, leading to the ongoing legal battle. Further hearings are awaited.
