Delhi govt to add 50 women-only buses with panic buttons on key routes
The Delhi government is planning to expand its ladies special bus service by adding around 50 buses on 20-25 busy routes, including Central Delhi, ITO, and areas with prominent colleges and offices, officials said on Saturday. The service aims to enhance safety for women passengers through features such as all-women staff, marshals, CCTV cameras, and panic buttons.
The service, currently operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) on only two routes, will be implemented in a more structured manner under the new plan. A senior DTC official stated that the scheme was originally introduced when the Congress party was in power but was later limited to one or two routes on special request. The new expansion is intended to provide a safer public transport option for women across the capital.
Key features of the expanded service include dedicated women staff, onboard security marshals, CCTV surveillance, and panic buttons for emergency alerts. The government believes these measures will significantly improve the security and comfort of women commuters.
