Delhi Government to Distribute Free Cycles to 1.3 Lakh Class 9 Girls from July End
The Delhi government is set to launch its free bicycle scheme for Class IX girl students studying in government schools, with distribution expected to begin by the end of July, according to officials familiar with the matter. The scheme will benefit approximately 1.3 lakh students across the capital.
The initiative was a major announcement made by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the Delhi Budget presented for the 2026-27 financial year. The procurement process for the bicycles has already started, and batches of cycles have begun arriving at designated locations.
An official stated that distribution will start from schools located in CM Gupta's Shalimar Bagh constituency and will subsequently be extended to all other constituencies in a phased manner. The scheme aims to promote access to education for girls by reducing transportation barriers.
This is part of the BJP government's broader focus on education and women's empowerment in Delhi. The free bicycle scheme is expected to encourage regular school attendance and reduce dropout rates among girl students.
No further details about the specifications of the bicycles or the total budget allocation for the scheme have been disclosed yet. Officials said the process would be completed in a timely manner to ensure all eligible students receive their cycles before the end of the academic session.
