Delhi Building Collapse During Heavy Rains: No Injuries Reported, Vehicles Damaged
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Monday, August 24, 2026, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Amid the downpour, a portion of a dilapidated building collapsed in the Chandni Mahal area, damaging three to four two-wheelers, according to police.
The incident occurred at 1569, Pahari Bhojla, following which the Chandni Mahal police station received a PCR call. A police team was dispatched to the spot, secured the area, and shifted people present at the site to a safe location. Vehicles lying under or near the debris were removed. No injuries were reported, police said.
Authorities confirmed that the building was in a dilapidated condition. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had previously issued a notice regarding the building's condition, and repair work was underway when the collapse occurred. Police stated that necessary action is being taken in coordination with MCD officials.
The heavy rains also caused waterlogging at multiple locations across the national Capital, leading to traffic congestion. Commuters faced delays on several key routes as civic agencies worked to clear blocked drains and restore normal movement.
This incident highlights the risks posed by old and poorly maintained structures during the monsoon season. Experts have repeatedly emphasised the need for timely inspections and enforcement of safety norms to prevent such accidents. The MCD's prior notice indicates that authorities were aware of the building's vulnerability, but the collapse underscores the challenges in ensuring timely repairs and occupant safety.
Local residents expressed concern over the condition of nearby buildings, many of which are decades old and structurally weak. They urged the authorities to conduct a comprehensive survey of such properties and take preventive measures before further damage occurs.
Police have urged the public to report any suspicious cracks or structural weaknesses in buildings to the local authorities. Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted more rainfall in the coming days, advising citizens to remain cautious and avoid venturing near vulnerable structures.
