Dating Trend 'Goblintimacy' Demands Radical Authenticity in Digital Age

Animals approach mating in varied ways: peacocks display their feathers; male nursery web spiders offer fly carcasses as gifts. Humans, however, must navigate dating without a fixed script. The arrival of online dating has added complexity. A recent trend, 'goblintimacy,' reflects a growing demand for genuine connections in an era of curated dating profiles, where distinguishing reality from fabrication is challenging.

'Goblintimacy' builds on a previous cultural trend. In 2022, 'goblin mode' was named Oxford's word of the year. It described being unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, or slovenly, with no shame. This trend emerged from fatigue over constantly presenting a polished version of oneself. Yet genuine connection remains elusive, leading to a call for authenticity.
