Crude Oil Surge to Five-Week High Drives Indian Equity and Rupee Decline

Indian stock markets opened lower on Wednesday as crude oil prices climbed to a more than five-week high amid escalating conflict in the Middle East. The Nifty 50 index fell 0.41% to 24,089.20, while the BSE Sensex declined 0.5% to 77,079.37 by 9:22 am, reversing gains from the previous session.

The Indian rupee also weakened, dropping 11 paise to 96.36 against the US dollar in early trade, reflecting investor concerns over rising energy costs and geopolitical uncertainty.

Ten of the 16 major sectoral indices recorded losses. The broader market saw small-cap and mid-cap stocks fall 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively, as per reports from the Press Trust of India.

The pharma sector was a notable laggard, with the index losing 1.6% after United States President Donald Trump outlined a phased tariff plan for imported generic medicines. The plan grants drugmakers a two-year window before duties take effect, but investors reacted negatively to the potential long-term cost pressures.

In corporate news, Bandhan Bank shares plunged 10% despite reporting a stronger-than-expected profit. The decline came after the lender cut its fiscal-year return-on-assets outlook, citing narrower net interest margins and higher operating expenses. The bank's cautious guidance overshadowed its quarterly earnings performance.

The rise in crude oil prices, driven by tensions in the Middle East, has raised concerns about inflation and its impact on India's trade deficit. Analysts noted that sustained high oil prices could pressure fiscal and external balances, influencing monetary policy decisions.

Market participants will watch for further developments in global energy markets and central bank signals. The volatility in equities and the rupee underscores the sensitivity of Indian financial markets to external shocks.
