CPI(M) demands Cauvery drinking water for villages left out of scheme

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched a week-long campaign demanding the supply of drinking water from the River Cauvery to villages in the Kangayam block of Tiruppur district. The campaign, which began on Wednesday, will continue until August 31.

Party leaders and workers are visiting households in several villages, including Veeranampalayam, Thambureddipalayam, Sivanmalai, Pothiyampalayam, Paranchervazhi, Paapini, Pazhayakottai, Padiyur, Nathakadayur, Marudurai, Maravapalayam, Keeranur, Ganapathipalayam, Balasamudiram Pudur and Alampadi. The door-to-door outreach is aimed at mobilising residents and highlighting the need for assured drinking water supply.

According to Selvaraj, a committee member of the CPI(M) Kangayam Taluk, these villages were left out of the Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Scheme. A similar campaign is also being carried out by the party in nine panchayats in the Vellakovil block, which face the same issue.

The Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Scheme is a major project intended to provide piped drinking water to rural habitations in the region. However, several villages have not been included in the project, forcing residents to depend on borewells and tanker supplies that are often unreliable, especially during summer months.

Party leaders have stated that the campaign will continue until the demand is addressed. They have urged the district administration and the state government to include the excluded villages in the scheme on a priority basis. The campaign is part of the party's broader efforts to highlight basic civic issues in the region.

Residents in the affected villages have expressed support for the demand, noting that access to safe drinking water remains a daily challenge. The CPI(M) has said it will submit a memorandum to the authorities after the door-to-door campaign concludes.
