Congress Warns Karnataka Legislators Against Cabinet Lobbying
Congress central leadership has reportedly warned Karnataka legislators against intense lobbying for cabinet berths, which has at times embarrassed the party. Sources close to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar indicated that central leaders have communicated a zero-tolerance policy towards such activities.
Since the swearing-in of Mr. Shivakumar along with 13 ministers on June 24, there has been intense lobbying for the remaining 20 cabinet positions. This has involved protests by supporters, interventions by religious heads and mutt seers, and meetings of legislators, causing embarrassment to the party.
According to sources, central leaders have told Mr. Shivakumar that cabinet expansion will be taken up at an appropriate time. They have also instructed him not to entertain groups of legislators lobbying for berths. The Karnataka cabinet can have up to 34 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
The Congress party, which formed the government after the 2023 assembly elections, is keen to maintain discipline and avoid any perception of factionalism. The warning underscores the party's commitment to merit-based appointments and its desire to prevent any damage to its image.
