Congo Coach Desabre Stunned as Father's Death Announced After World Cup Loss

DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre's historic World Cup journey with his team ended not only in a 1-2 defeat to England but also in personal tragedy, as the media officer announced his father's death during the post-match press conference.

Desabre had led Congo to their first World Cup knockout stage since 1974, navigating a tough group that included Portugal and Colombia. Their campaign nearly saw them overcome England after Brian Cipenga's seventh-minute goal, but two late strikes from Harry Kane sealed England's victory.

Speaking at the press conference, Desabre appeared composed while reflecting on his team's performance. However, near the end of the session, the media officer interjected in French: 'Thank you, but we are announcing that the coach has lost his father. So sincere condolences.'

The 49-year-old Frenchman, visibly shocked by the public announcement, simply said 'merci' before leaving the room. It remains unclear when Desabre learned of his loss before the announcement.

Despite the tragedy, Desabre had spoken with dignity about Congo's exit: 'We are more proud than disappointed. We scored five goals in the tournament and played much higher-ranked teams, managing good results. We managed to corner England, but they reacted—that is the capacity of big teams. It took the best striker in the world to save them. We did what we could.'

The football community has since extended condolences to Desabre and his family.
