CJP to Submit Intimation Letter to Delhi Police Ahead of October 10 Jantar Mantar Protest
Security was stepped up outside the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), ahead of the expected arrival of Saurav Das, convenor of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who is scheduled to submit an "intimation letter" to the Delhi Police regarding his organisation's proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
According to the CJP, the protest will press for two demands: the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The intended submission follows a day of heightened activity in the capital. Around 260 people, including 10 Members of Parliament, were detained on October 6 during a march organised by the Opposition INDIA bloc from Parliament to the headquarters of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K. C. Venugopal and Pawan Khera were among those detained after staging a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan. All were released later, according to reports.
"What has been done to my country is treason," Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said, as Opposition parties closed ranks on Tuesday and marched from Parliament to the ECI headquarters. Their demands included the scrapping of the SIR of electoral rolls, the restoration of the names of deleted voters, and the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
The Election Commission has pushed back on several claims made during the protests. It fact-checked assertions relating to Form 6 following an observation by the Supreme Court, and stated that a demand by an Opposition MP for a meeting at the Parliament Annexe "could not be accepted".
At the centre of the dispute is the SIR of electoral rolls, an exercise the ECI has described as a clean-up of voter lists. Opposition parties contend that the process has led to the deletion of eligible voters’ names and have demanded that these be restored. The Commission has rejected characterisations of the exercise that it says are not supported by the record.
Jantar Mantar is one of the designated sites in Delhi where protests are permitted, and organisers are ordinarily required to inform the police in advance and obtain permission. The submission of an intimation letter is part of that process; it does not by itself guarantee clearance. It was not immediately clear whether the Delhi Police had granted permission for the October 10 gathering or how many participants were expected.
