CJI Flags Challenges: Speedy UAPA Trials and Tribunal Credibility

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday highlighted two significant challenges facing the Indian judiciary: the speedy completion of trials under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and enhancing the credibility of tribunals.

Speaking at a judicial conference, the CJI noted that UAPA cases often involve complex investigations and voluminous evidence, leading to prolonged trials. He stressed the need for efficient case management to ensure timely justice, while also upholding constitutional safeguards.

On tribunals, the CJI pointed out that their credibility is crucial for reducing the burden on higher courts. He called for reforms to improve their functioning and public trust.

The remarks come amid ongoing debates about the balance between national security and civil liberties in UAPA cases, as well as the effectiveness of tribunals in delivering swift justice.
