Civilian Killed by Unexploded Ordnance in Baramulla, Police Investigate

A civilian was killed on Saturday after an old explosive object detonated in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad, a resident of the Chandoosa area near the Line of Control (LoC). Such incidents, often involving abandoned mines, are occasionally reported in the region.

According to a statement from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the explosion occurred around 3 pm in a remote Gujjar shelter in the upper reaches of Baramulla. Emergency teams arrived promptly and found Bajjad dead.

Police have not confirmed whether the object was a mine. “A forensic examination of the scene has been conducted, and specialist teams are carrying out thorough sanitisation of the area as a precautionary measure to rule out presence of any other unexploded explosive material,” the statement said.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact nature of the device. The area remains under observation.
