Chittoor judge urges public vigilance to combat trafficking of women and children
Chittoor district observed the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on Thursday, with officials calling for collective vigilance and greater public participation in combating trafficking of women and children.
Inaugurating an awareness campaign at NPS Savitramma Government Degree College, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Chairperson and Senior Civil Judge M.S. Bharati expressed concern that human trafficking remains a serious social challenge despite technological and law enforcement advances.
She highlighted that the crime takes multiple forms, including sexual exploitation, child trafficking, bonded labour, child marriages, organised begging rackets, and illegal organ trade. “A majority of the victims are from vulnerable groups such as women, children, orphans, and school dropouts,” the judge said.
Ms. Bharati warned the public against fraudulent job offers and online traps on social media platforms. She urged people to seek police help when encountering suspicious individuals or activities.
Integrated Child Development Society (ICDS) Project Director D. Venkateswari spoke about the importance of community awareness. Deputy SP (Women Police Wing) Srinivasa Rao termed trafficking an “organised crime.” Officials urged students to stay informed about legal safeguards under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, and to call Childline 1098 in emergencies involving children.
