Chennai: 7 Civic Officials Suspended After Anti-Corruption Raid
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the municipal body of Chennai, has suspended seven of its officials following a raid by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), the state's anti-corruption agency.
The suspensions were announced after DVAC conducted raids in two zones of the corporation. In the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone, four officials were suspended: an Executive Engineer, an Assistant Executive Engineer from Unit 16, an Assistant Engineer from Division 74, and a Junior Assistant from the Revenue Section. These suspensions were based on a First Information Report (FIR No.06/AC/2026/CC-II) dated July 6, 2026.
In the Teynampet zone, three officials were placed under suspension following a joint surprise check. Among them were a sanitary officer from Unit 27 and a conservancy supervisor from Unit 26.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran stated that the DVAC raid occurred a week ago, and the report was received on Friday. He said: “These actions were taken based on inputs from DVAC. We have also pressed major charges against these officials and inquiry will be conducted and major penalties such as dismissal/removal from service will be awarded following due process. Further strict warnings have been issued to all officials in accordance with the instructions of the Honourable Chief Minister. I have also directed all Zonal Officers and Assistant Engineers to prominently display boards containing the DVAC contact numbers in all Corporation offices to facilitate the reporting of complaints.”
The GCC has initiated departmental proceedings against the suspended officials. The move signals a tough stance against corruption in the civic body, in line with directives from the state government.
