CBI charges husband, mother-in-law in former model Twisha Sharma's death

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh in connection with the death of former actor-model Twisha Sharma, who was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. Officials confirmed the development on Monday (August 17, 2026).

The chargesheet, submitted before a special court in Bhopal, names Samarth Singh, a lawyer, and Giribala Singh, a former district judge. Twisha's family has accused them of subjecting her to mental and physical abuse, as well as dowry-related harassment. These allegations are part of the formal complaint that led to the investigation.

Twisha married Samarth Singh in December 2025. On May 12, she was found dead at the couple's residence. According to the first information report (FIR), Samarth Singh took her to AIIMS Bhopal, where he claimed she had killed herself at home at 10.20 p.m. However, doctors at AIIMS reported that she was brought dead to the hospital, prompting the registration of a medico-legal case.

The initial police investigation was followed by a second autopsy ordered by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to address critical doubts raised by Twisha's family, who alleged lapses in the first autopsy conducted by AIIMS Bhopal. The second autopsy was carried out on May 24 by a four-member team from AIIMS Delhi in Bhopal.

After reviewing the evidence, the CBI took over the investigation and subsequently arrested Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh. The chargesheet now formalises the allegations against them.

In their statements, Twisha's family has alleged that she was tormented by her in-laws, who were reportedly dissatisfied with the dowry paid at the time of the marriage on December 9, 2025. They have also claimed that the 33-year-old former model and actor faced mental torture and domestic violence, which they believe pushed her to take the extreme step.

The legal process will now proceed in the special court, where the accused will have the opportunity to respond to the charges. As per standard procedure, the court will examine the evidence and decide on further action.

Authorities have urged the public to respect the privacy of the individuals involved and avoid speculating on the case while it is sub judice.

For those in distress, mental health support is available through the State’s health helpline 104, Tele-MANAS at 14416, and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline at 044-24640050.
