Canada Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs of Up to 50% on US Goods
Canada has announced counter-tariffs as high as 50% on a range of American products, responding to the latest wave of levies imposed by the United States on Canadian imports. The move, announced on Tuesday, escalates a trade dispute between the two neighbours after talks collapsed last week.
The Canadian tariffs will apply to nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion; £15 billion) worth of US goods, including steel, furniture, fresh tuna, and cotton T-shirts. The list of targeted products was designed to mirror the Canadian goods hit by US tariffs. The levies are scheduled to take effect on 8 September.
The breakdown in negotiations came late last week, with each side accusing the other of making unreasonable last-minute demands. The Trump administration had imposed 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods after the talks fell apart on Friday, prompting Canada's response.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said that Canada's retaliation is proportionate and strategic. “Those tariffs will have real consequences for Canadian workers, businesses and communities across our nation,” he said. “Canada must respond.”
In addition to the tariffs, Canada will provide C$7.5 billion in support programmes for businesses and workers affected by the US levies. These measures are designed to minimise job losses and help companies stay afloat during the trade conflict.
The imposition of taxes on trade between two of the world's closest trading partners is likely to cause economic pain on both sides of the border.
