Boat Capsizes in Thrissur Kole Wetland: Two Missing, Search to Resume Saturday

Two persons are feared missing after a mini boat carrying five people capsized in the Kole Wetland at Nedupuzha in Thrissur district on Friday evening amid heavy rainfall. Three others managed to swim to safety without injury.

The Kole Wetland had reportedly been leased for aquaculture, and the group had gone to feed fish when the accident occurred. The Fire and Rescue Services received an alert around 7 p.m. but suspended the search operation at approximately 10 p.m. due to inclement weather and poor visibility. Officials stated that the search will resume on Saturday morning.

Thrissur experienced heavy rainfall throughout Friday, and a holiday was declared for Saturday in view of forecasts of continued bad weather. The area where the boat overturned is known to be considerably deep.

Police sources indicated that it was still being verified whether the missing persons had escaped unnoticed. “Only one of the three survivors is acquainted with the missing persons, and efforts are under way to elicit details from him,” a Nedupuzha police official said.

The Kole Wetlands, spanning the Thrissur and Malappuram districts, are traditionally used alternately for paddy cultivation and aquaculture.
