BIS Raid in Telangana: Non-Hallmarked Gold Jewellery Worth ₹10 Crore Seized
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized approximately 7.875 kg of non-hallmarked gold jewellery valued at around ₹10 crore during a raid on a jewellery shop in Warangal district, Telangana. The operation was conducted by BIS officials from the Hyderabad Branch Office under the direction of P.V. Srikanth, Director and Head of the office.
The raid, carried out on [date if known, else omit], is part of enforcement of mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016. The Union government has mandated that all gold jewellery sold in specified districts must bear a BIS hallmark. The seized items included necklace sets, rings, chains, earrings, and other gold articles.
Mr. Srikanth stated that 13 districts in Telangana, including Warangal and Hanamkonda, are covered under the mandatory hallmarking regime. He urged jewellers in these districts to sell only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery with a genuine Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number and comply with the BIS Act provisions.
The BIS also advises consumers to purchase only hallmarked gold jewellery with a valid HUID, verify the HUID using the BIS CARE mobile application before purchase, and insist on a proper invoice. Consumers can use the app to report misuse of hallmarking or sale of jewellery without a genuine HUID. Further action against the establishment has been initiated under the BIS Act.
