Bihar Withdraws NEET Protest Cases; Parliament to Debate Anti-Paper Leak Bill
The Bihar government announced on Monday that it will withdraw all cases lodged against protesters over the NEET paper leak and release those jailed. A statement from the State’s Home Department said no adverse legal action will be taken against individuals who participated in protests before 6 p.m. on July 26, 2026.
In New Delhi, the government introduced a Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday that provides for harsher penalties and time-bound investigations into examination paper leaks. The move came amid uproar from the Opposition, which demanded a discussion on police action against protesting students. The stalemate is likely to end on Tuesday after Speaker Om Birla brokered a truce between the Treasury and Opposition benches.
In a separate development, the Moradabad Divisional Commissioner’s court stayed the proposed demolition of 38 buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur until the final hearing. The interim relief was granted after the university’s legal team moved an application. The Rampur Development Authority had issued a demolition notice on July 15, describing the structures as built without permission.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court struck down government orders granting government jobs to the family members of the Karur stampede victims. A Division Bench allowed public interest litigation petitions challenging the Chief Minister-led government’s decision.
In the United States, a 15-year-old suspect was arrested after a shooting at a food festival near Seattle’s Space Needle that killed three and injured at least four. The teen is being held in juvenile detention on charges of firearms violations and first-degree assault.
Ahead of the Bankipur Assembly bypoll on July 30, BJP national president Nitin Nabin held a road show in support of the party candidate.
