Bihar to give financial aid, government job to Bhojpur encounter victim's family
The Bihar government on Thursday announced financial assistance and a government job for a member of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari's family. Tiwari, 28, was killed in an alleged police encounter on June 17, 2026, at Bilauti village in Bhojpur district.
Tiwari, who was said to be engaged in social work in the area, was killed a day after a video surfaced showing him threatening local policemen with an illegal firearm. The video went viral on social media, turning the incident into a major controversy. Family members, villagers, and opposition political leaders alleged that Tiwari was killed in a fake police encounter.
Following the incident, the family met Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in Patna on July 24, 2026, who assured them of an impartial inquiry. Earlier, policeman Akshay Kumar, who allegedly fired first at Tiwari, was suspended, arrested, and sent to jail for not cooperating with the inquiry and for remaining absent and absconding for a long period. His pistol was also seized. On June 23, 2026, the Bihar police registered a murder case against five police personnel under section 103(1) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, all of whom have been suspended, a police official said.
The Bihar cabinet, at its meeting on June 24, 2026, ordered a judicial probe into the incident. The probe commission, headed by retired Justice Vinod Kumar Sinha, met Tiwari's family members on June 25, 2026, and recorded their statements. According to sources close to the government, the commission has submitted its interim report.
“On the basis of the interim report of the judicial inquiry, the Bihar government will provide financial assistance to the family and a government job to a member of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari’s family,” Chief Minister Choudhary said in a social media post on Thursday.
In an earlier post after meeting the family, the CM had asserted that the “government is strongly standing with the aggrieved family and it will take all necessary steps to provide justice to the family.”
The judicial commission's interim report has not been made public. A senior official said, “It’s an interim report, not the final report and it cannot be made public.” The government’s decision marks a significant step in a case that has drawn widespread attention over allegations of a fake encounter and calls for accountability.
