Bihar Police Suspends Officer After Video Shows Firing at Siwan Protesters
The Bihar Police have suspended one policeman after a video emerged showing police officers firing during a protest in Siwan district on Saturday. The suspension was confirmed by a senior police officer, who stated that an officer from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been placed under suspension pending investigation.
Speaking to The Indian Express on Sunday, Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha said that eight rounds were fired during the protests. 'From the police’s side, four rounds were fired from long-range weapons and three rounds from pistols. In all, around eight to 10 rounds were fired. We are also investigating where the remaining firing came from,' Jha said.
The violence occurred during a statewide bandh (shutdown) called in response to the alleged leak of the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) question paper and previous police action against student protesters. The bandh turned violent in Siwan on Saturday, leading to injuries on both sides. Three civilians reportedly sustained bullet injuries, and several police personnel, including SP Jha, were also injured.
The incident has raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement during protests. The suspended officer is being investigated for his role in the firing. Police have assured that a thorough inquiry will be conducted to determine if the use of force was justified and within legal limits.
