Bihar migrant dies in furnace blast at Tamil Nadu copper unit

Gummidipoondi, July 14: A 24-year-old migrant worker from Bihar was killed and five others injured after a copper melting furnace exploded at a private recycling unit in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased, Ravi Ranjan, and the injured workers — Ranjith Kumar, Prince Kumar, Om Kumar, Raja Babu and Om Prakash — all from Bihar, were employed at Jain Metals. They were engaged in routine copper recycling operations when the furnace exploded, according to police.

Company staff, along with Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police, rushed the victims to the Government Hospital in Gummidipoondi. Ravi Ranjan succumbed to severe burn injuries on the way. The others are undergoing treatment for minor injuries.

Police said a case will be registered based on a complaint from the workers. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and the circumstances leading to the incident.
