Bihar Government Withdraws FIRs Against NEET Protesters, Drops Legal Action
The Bihar government on Monday announced that it will not pursue any punitive or legal action against individuals who participated in the recent mass protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examinations. The decision applies to all protests held in the state prior to 6:00 PM on July 26, 2026.
In a formal statement, the state government declared that no “punitive, retaliatory, or adverse legal action” will be taken against any demonstrator. Furthermore, a legal process has been initiated to immediately withdraw all First Information Reports (FIRs), formal complaints, and show cause notices registered against individuals in connection with the protests.
The widespread demonstrations were sparked by allegations of paper leaks and other irregularities in the NEET/UG examinations. Protesters demanded reforms and greater accountability within the examination system and higher education sector. The protests, which included a 'Bihar Bandh' on certain days, saw clashes between security personnel and demonstrators, leading to multiple arrests and detentions.
The government’s decision to drop all legal proceedings is seen as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and address public concerns. However, it has also raised questions about the handling of exam-related grievances and the balance between lawful protest and maintenance of public order.
This move by the Bihar government comes amid ongoing nationwide debates about transparency and fairness in competitive examinations, with several student groups and political parties calling for systemic reforms.
