Bihar Appoints Cricketers Akash Deep, Mukesh Kumar as Deputy SPs

The Bihar government on Friday appointed Indian cricketers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar as Deputy Superintendents of Police (Dy SPs) under the state's 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' scheme. The two fast bowlers were among 19 athletes who received appointment letters during a ceremony at the Urja Auditorium in Patna.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary handed over the letters at the event organized by the state's Sports Department. The other athletes included national and international medal winners from various sports.

Speaking at the ceremony, Choudhary said it was a matter of pride for Bihar that athletes were being appointed to high-ranking positions such as DSP for the first time. He expressed confidence that this would boost the morale of young athletes in the state and encourage them to excel in sports.

The Chief Minister also outlined the government's focus on sports development, including training, modern facilities, and infrastructure. He announced a campaign starting September 15 to identify sports talent at the panchayat level, with selected individuals receiving systematic training to ensure opportunities for athletes from rural areas.

On infrastructure, Choudhary said the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna is being redeveloped with a seating capacity of around 40,000 and world-class amenities. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been entrusted with its operation, enabling the stadium to host national and international competitions.

The 'Medal Lao, Naukri Pao' scheme aims to provide government jobs to athletes who win medals at national or international levels, ensuring financial security and social recognition. Appointments are made to posts such as Dy SP, Sub-Inspector, Panchayati Raj Officer, and other suitable positions.

Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said the scheme lays a strong foundation for athletes' dignity and future security. 'Our goal is to establish Bihar as one of the country's leading sporting states,' she said, adding that the government is committed to ensuring no talented athlete is held back by lack of resources.

An official from the Sports Department noted that the appointments have boosted athletes' morale and inspired young people across the state to consider sports as a viable career option.
