Bhogapuram airport opened six months early; GMR chief says it will spur regional economy

The Bhogapuram international airport in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district was officially inaugurated on Saturday. The airport, developed by GMR Group, was completed six months ahead of its stipulated deadline, according to Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao, the company's chairman.

Mr. Rao, who hails from Rajam in the same district, expressed his happiness that the airport was built in his native place. "The Bhogapuram airport will help spur economic activity in the region, like the Shamshabad airport in Hyderabad. I am very happy that the airport has been built in my native district," he said during the inaugural ceremony.

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for their support in expediting the project's construction. The airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity for the north Andhra region, which includes Visakhapatnam, a major industrial and port city.

GMR Group, which also operates airports in New Delhi and Hyderabad, developed the Bhogapuram airport through its special purpose vehicle, GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited. The project involved the construction of a modern terminal, runway, and supporting infrastructure, all completed within a tight timeframe.

Officials said the early completion reflects efficient project management. The airport is likely to cater to both passenger and cargo traffic, providing a boost to trade and tourism in the region. With Visakhapatnam emerging as a key business hub, the new airport is expected to ease pressure on existing air travel infrastructure in the area.

The development is part of a broader push to enhance connectivity in Andhra Pradesh. The state has been focusing on improving infrastructure to attract investment and promote economic growth. The Bhogapuram airport, once fully operational, is expected to create employment opportunities and support ancillary industries such as aviation services, logistics, and hospitality.

During the inauguration, Mr. Rao highlighted the airport's potential to transform the region, drawing parallels with the impact of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad on Hyderabad's growth. He described the completion of the project ahead of schedule as a significant achievement for GMR Group and a proud moment for the local community.

The government's support, including fast-track approvals and land allocation, played a crucial role in the timely completion of the project, company officials noted. The airport's strategic location is expected to make it a major gateway for both domestic and international travel in the region.

As the airport opens, stakeholders in north Andhra are hopeful that it will catalyse economic development and improve the quality of life for residents. The project stands as an example of public-private partnership in infrastructure development.
