Bhatkal Police Book Both Sides After Car Intercepted Over Inter-Faith Pair
Bhatkal, Uttara Kannada: An incident on Wednesday night in which a car carrying a 21-year-old Muslim man and a Hindu woman was stopped by a group of activists has led to police cases being registered against both the activists and the man. Officials said the situation is currently calm.
According to the police, the confrontation took place on the Bhatkal-Sagar Road. The activists, claiming they received information that a Muslim man was accompanying a Hindu woman, intercepted the vehicle and questioned the occupants. The woman was later escorted to her home in Bhatkal. The man, identified as Shaheed (21), was allegedly assaulted and then handed over to the police.
Police have registered separate complaints. One complaint was filed by the activists alleging that Shaheed was involved in an unlawful act. Another complaint was filed by Shaheed's family alleging assault and illegal detention. Both sides have been asked to provide evidence.
Senior police officials from Uttara Kannada district reached Bhatkal to monitor the situation. Additional forces have been deployed as a precautionary measure. Authorities stated that legal action will be taken based on the investigation.
The region has seen communal tensions in the past, but officials said there is no immediate threat to public order. Investigations are ongoing.
