Bharathiar University Proposes Exclusive Hostel for Transgender Students to Address Housing Bias
Coimbatore's Bharathiar University is planning to establish an exclusive hostel for transgender students, after learning that current students faced discrimination while seeking private accommodation. The proposal, which is set to be presented before the university's Syndicate, aims to create a safe and supportive living environment for transgender individuals pursuing higher education.
At present, the university has only a few transgender students enrolled in postgraduate programmes. These students have reported difficulties in finding rental housing near campus, as landlords are often reluctant to lease properties to them. The university's Registrar, R. Rajavel, stated that the proposed hostel would not only address this immediate need but also encourage other higher education institutions to adopt similar measures.
Kongunadu Arts and Science College, also in Coimbatore district, has already taken steps to make its campus more inclusive for transgender students and faculty. The college waives tuition fees for transgender students and has established separate restrooms for them. Last year, L. Beautlyna, an Assistant Professor of Commerce at the college, received the Trans Achievers Award 2025 from the Chennai-based Born2Win Social Welfare Trust for being the first transgender faculty member with a Ph.D. qualification in the state.
Despite these individual efforts, academics note that many higher educational institutions remain hesitant to fully implement the framework for transgender equity outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy calls for inclusive practices, including provision of hostel facilities and other support systems, to ensure equal access to education for all genders.
Bharathiar University's move is seen as a step towards fulfilling these NEP objectives. However, the proposal requires approval from the Syndicate, the university's highest decision-making body. If passed, the exclusive hostel would be the first of its kind in the region.
The university's initiative comes amid broader social debates about transgender rights in India. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, prohibits discrimination in education and employment, but implementation remains inconsistent. Educational institutions across the country are being urged to create safer spaces for transgender students, who often face stigma and exclusion.
While the proposal has been welcomed by activists, some caution that separate hostels should not lead to segregation. They argue that inclusive policies should aim for integration while providing necessary support. The university has not yet detailed the timeline or capacity of the proposed hostel.
Bharathiar University, established in 1982, is one of the major universities in Tamil Nadu, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The move to propose a transgender hostel aligns with its stated commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
