Bhalswa Landfill Cleanup: 99 Lakh Tonnes Remediated, Dec 31 Deadline Reaffirmed
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal on Saturday inspected the ongoing remediation work at the Bhalswa landfill site in Delhi, directing officials to adhere to the December 31 deadline for clearing the remaining waste. He also instructed that the processing of fresh waste reaching the site should not slow down the remediation of legacy waste.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) briefed the Minister on the progress, stating that 99.07 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste had been remediated at the Bhalswa dumpsite as of July 31. The remaining legacy waste is expected to be cleared by October 15. For waste accumulated at the site up to March 2026, the target for complete clearance is December 31.
Speaking after the visit, Mr. Lal said that the processing of legacy waste and its scientific disposal are being accelerated in "mission mode" with the use of modern technology. He highlighted that efforts are on to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to improve cleanliness, public health, air quality, and civic amenities in the surrounding areas.
"With coordinated efforts of the Central and Delhi governments, all necessary steps are being taken on a war footing to ensure the complete closure of the Bhalswa landfill within the stipulated timeframe," the Minister said.
The Bhalswa landfill is one of the three major dumpsites in Delhi, along with Ghazipur and Okhla. All three sites are undergoing biomining and remediation efforts to reclaim land and mitigate environmental hazards. Biomining involves the scientific processing of old, decomposed waste to segregate soil, rejects, and combustible materials. The recovered soil can be used for landscaping or filling low-lying areas, while the rejects are sent for treatment or disposal.
After multiple delays, the Okhla and Bhalswa landfills are now scheduled to be cleared by December 2026, while Ghazipur is slated for clearance by December 2027. The current deadline of December 31 for the waste accumulated up to March 2026 at Bhalswa represents a significant milestone in the city's waste management plan.
The Minister's inspection underscores the government's focus on tackling the long-standing issue of unmanaged waste in the national capital. The MCD has been carrying out the work, facing challenges such as the continuous inflow of fresh waste, which competes with the remediation efforts for space and resources.
Mr. Lal’s directive to ensure that fresh waste processing does not hamper remediation work highlights the need for a dual approach—managing daily waste generation while addressing the legacy waste that has accumulated over the years.
The progress at Bhalswa will be closely monitored, with the December 31 deadline serving as a crucial test of the authorities' commitment to cleaning up the capital.
