Bengaluru Tenants: Gruha Jyothi Benefits Safe Despite Aadhaar Verification Drive

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) has issued a clarification to tenant beneficiaries of the state government's Gruha Jyothi scheme, assuring them that their free electricity benefits will not be affected by the ongoing door-to-door verification drive that started on July 2.

In a press release, Bescom addressed concerns raised by tenants who feared losing the scheme's benefits because their electricity bills still carry the Aadhaar details of previous occupants. The utility stated that staff conducting the verification will only update the Aadhaar information to reflect the current residents.

“Many tenants expressed apprehension that they would lose the benefits of the scheme due to Aadhaar details of the previous tenants connected to their electricity bills,” the release noted. “Bescom clarifies that during the ongoing verification drive, its staff would only replace the Aadhaar details based on current occupancy.”

The verification drive is part of efforts to ensure that the Gruha Jyothi scheme reaches genuine beneficiaries. Under the scheme, eligible households receive up to 200 units of free electricity per month. Tenants who have applied for the benefit and are currently occupying the premises need not worry about losing the subsidy.

Bescom has also set up a helpline for consumers who have questions or need further clarification. The helpline number is 1912, along with four special numbers: 94808 16111, 94808 16112, 94808 16113, and 94808 16114. The helpline operates daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
