Bengaluru Court Sentences Man to 7 Years in 2020 IS-Linked Terror Plot Case
A special court in Bengaluru on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old man to seven years in prison for his involvement in an Islamic State-linked terror conspiracy. The accused, Mohammed Haneef, a resident of Bengaluru, pleaded guilty to all charges, including terrorism, conspiracy, and illegal procurement of firearms.
Haneef was one of 20 individuals named in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheet in the 2020 case, which uncovered a terror plot spanning the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The plot, which emerged in 2019-2020, involved the so-called Al Hind module, which allegedly radicalised youth under the direction of foreign handlers and individuals already accused of terrorist activities, according to the police.
The court sentenced Haneef on eight counts related to terrorism, one count of conspiracy, and one count of illegally procuring guns. The specific details of the charges were not immediately disclosed.
The case is part of ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to dismantle networks linked to the Islamic State (IS) in the country. The NIA had filed the chargesheet in 2020, alleging that the module aimed to carry out terrorist acts in India. The trial against the other accused is still underway.
The sentencing underscores the judiciary's role in addressing terrorism-related offenses while ensuring due process. The court's decision was based on the accused's voluntary plea of guilt, which is a factor considered in sentencing under Indian law.
