Bengal Police Seize Gelatin Sticks, Crude Bombs in Pre-Independence Day Raids
In a coordinated operation ahead of Independence Day, West Bengal Police seized a large cache of explosives, including gelatin sticks and crude bombs, from multiple locations in Birbhum district on Friday. One person was arrested in connection with the recovery, officials said.
The first seizure took place in the Pathanpara area under Rampurhat police station limits, where 304 gelatin sticks were reportedly found at the residence of a suspect. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody for further questioning.
In a separate operation, police recovered approximately 38 kg of gelatin sticks from another location in the district. The exact site of this recovery has not been specified, but officials confirmed that the material was likely intended for illegal use.
A night raid at Kot village in the Mallarpur area led to the discovery of four sacks filled with crude bombs inside a mud house. The explosives were found hidden in a manner that suggested they were being stored for potential deployment, though police have not yet determined the intended target or timing.
Another operation at Loknamara village, under Nalhati police station limits, uncovered a substantial quantity of explosive-making materials, including ammonium nitrate and detonators. These items were found in an abandoned house, raising concerns about the scale of the network involved.
The seizures come amid an intensified security grid across West Bengal as the state prepares to celebrate the 79th Independence Day. Police have increased patrolling, set up checkpoints, and are conducting proactive searches in vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
Senior police officers have described the recoveries as significant, noting that such materials could have posed a serious threat to public safety. The arrested individual is being interrogated to trace the origins of the explosives and identify any accomplices.
Authorities have urged local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Further investigation is underway, and additional arrests cannot be ruled out as police continue to analyze the evidence collected during the raids.
