Beacon programme to back early-stage spacetech startups with $500,000 each

Early-stage venture capital firm Abyro Capital has launched Beacon, a dedicated spacetech cohort in partnership with T-Hub, India's leading innovation ecosystem. The programme aims to identify, invest in and accelerate early-stage spacetech startups by combining institutional capital, mentorship and ecosystem support.

According to Abyro Capital, Beacon will help founders transform breakthrough technologies into globally competitive businesses. The launch comes at a time when India's space economy, currently valued at approximately $8.4 billion, is projected to grow to $44 billion by 2033, creating significant opportunities for private spacetech firms.

The programme features a mentor council comprising accomplished space scientists, founders, operators and industry leaders. These mentors will work closely with participating startups, offering technical guidance, product validation, strategic introductions and commercial insights throughout the programme.

Vamsi Kora, founder and managing partner of Abyro Capital, said the plan through Beacon is to back entrepreneurs, strengthen India's innovation ecosystem and help create the next generation of globally relevant spacetech companies.

T-Hub will enable participating startups to leverage its innovation platform, startup community, investor network and industry partnerships to accelerate growth, strategic collaborations and market access.

Under the programme, five startups building technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 2-4 will each receive a committed investment of $500,000. In addition, they will undergo an intensive eight-week acceleration programme featuring strategic mentorship, technical validation, customer introductions, product showcase opportunities and fundraising support.

India's space industry has traditionally been dominated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), but recent reforms have opened up the sector to private players. The government's decision to allow private participation in space activities has led to a surge in startups focusing on satellite technology, launch vehicles and space-based applications. Initiatives like Beacon are expected to provide the necessary support for these startups to thrive.

The programme's focus on TRL 2-4 indicates that it is targeting startups that have moved beyond the conceptual stage and are in the early stages of technology development. This is a crucial phase where many startups require external funding and mentorship to progress.
