Bank security guard's accidental gunshot kills customer in Delhi
NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old farmer was killed on Tuesday after a security guard's firearm accidentally discharged at a Union Bank branch in southwest Delhi's Jaffarpur Kalan area. The deceased, identified as Manish Kumar, a resident of Issapur village, had visited the bank to update his Aadhaar card.
Police have arrested the security guard, Vinod Kumar, 53, an ex-serviceman who retired from the Army in 2018. He has been working with a private security agency for the past two years and was posted at the bank.
According to police, the incident occurred around 10:30 am when Vinod was loading cartridges into his 12-bore double-barrel gun. The firearm allegedly discharged accidentally, and the bullet struck Manish in the back. Vinod later told police that he reported late for duty and by the time he began loading the cartridges, customers and bank staff had already arrived.
The sound of the gunshot caused panic among customers and employees. People rushed towards the entrance and found Manish lying in a pool of blood. Police received a PCR call around 11:06 am alerting them about the incident. By the time police reached the spot, Manish had been taken to RTR Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Manish, a farmer, is survived by his elderly parents and five older sisters. A case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
Police have seized the weapon and sent it for forensic examination. A post-mortem examination has been conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death, and the report is awaited. Investigators are also scanning CCTV footage to determine the sequence of events.
